Power of Reinforcement

Reinforcement โ€“ occurs when a stimulus change immediately follows a response and increases the future frequency of that type of behavior in similar conditions (Cooper, Heron, and Heward, 2007)

  • Positive reinforcement โ€“ addition of a stimulus immediately following a behavior, results in an increased occurrence of that behavior in the future
  • Negative reinforcement โ€“ removal or withdrawal of a stimulus immediately following a behavior, results in a decreased occurrence of that behavior in the future

Types of Reinforcement

  • Tangibles
    • Pair yourself with tangibles
  • Social reinforcement
    • Use social games or silly songs as reinforcement
  • Be silly and have fun!
    • Play
    • Get excited!
